Bellevue was founded in 1869 by William Meydenbauer and Aaron Mercer. When Lake Washington Floating Bridge was opened in 1940Bellevue was just a rural area that lacked development. Although Bellevue was small, developers strived to make changes to it in the 1920s.
James S. Ditty predicted that in the future Bellevue will be a city with a population of 200,000. He made plans that incorporated the bridging of Lake Washington. There were many golf courses and airports at the area.He added his plans to a map and published it in 1928.
The city’s name in fact comes from the French term for “beautiful view”. When the weather is clear we can see picturesque views from hilltops and strategically situated high-rise buildings in the incorporated city of the Olympic Mountains and Cascade.

Bellevue is situated at 47°36′N 122°12′W (47.5976, −122.1592). The city has a total area of 36.47 square miles (94.46 km2), of which, 31.97 square miles (82.80 km2) is land and 4.50 square miles (11.65 km2) is water based on the United States Census Bureau.
Bellevue is located between Lake Washington to the west and the smaller Lake Sammamish to the east. A big part of Bellevue’s teritory is drained by the Kelsey Creek watershed. Its source is in the Larsen and Phantom Lake green belt and the outlet is close to the spot where Interstate 90 meets Lake Washington’s eastern shore. Interstate 405 that runs on north-south bisects Bellevueand Interstate 90 crosses the southern part from west to east. The State Route 520 freeway roughly runs close the upper reaches of Bellevue.
Bellevue is surrounded by the cities of Kirkland to the north and Redmond to the northeast together with the Overlake and Crossroads neighborhoods. The city is surrounded to the west by many affluent suburbs such as Medina, Clyde Hill, Hunts Point and Yarrow Point. The city of Rendon borders the south end of Bellevue and the recently incorporated city of Newcastle borders it to the southeast.
When Murrow Memorial Bridge opened the access from Seattle considerably improved, and the area slowly but steadily became a bedroom community. When the Japanese Internment started in 1942, a large quantity of farmland was available for development. This helped for the Bellevue downtown area to be developed.
Bellevue had become the fourth most populated city in the state of Washington by the 1970. It’s followed by Seattle, Spokane, and Tacoma.
Bellevue is still one of the largest cities in the state since it has several skyscrapers located in its center and a thriving business community. In the mid-2000s Bellevue experienced a building boom because of construction developments such as Lincoln Square and the Bravern.

The initial plans contained “superblock” mixed use projects that are just like the projects of Lincoln Square. The mayor of Bellevue hopes to fix the transportation problems with the purpose to redevelop the downtown core.
